The one I based my build on is unfortunately no longer available online but a quick search for "UDS build" should help.
There are different options for lids etc... you could use a lid from a kettle bbq or the lid from the drum.
not sure about low cost grates at this time of the year as homebase ...

I tried lumpwood when i first started (not that long ago) and found the same as you that the lumpwood burned too quickly and it was mainly small bits with the odd huge chunk in amongst it.
