I used to put about 1-2" of sandpit sand in the water bowl (no water) with foil over to keep clean. As suggested fill the basket AS MUCH AS YOU CAN (what you don't use you'll have left), take a chimneys worth out of the middle, light, allow to get properly lit, replace in middle, put in sand bowl ...

Rather than a clay saucer I put sandpit sand in the water pan, bit of foil over the top to keep it clean. Works really well.

Not tried the Big-K but I use the restaurant grade lumpwood from Booker - £15 for 2x12kg often a little broken up but still a lot of big pieces (which I tend to break up a bit for the KJ...). I usually crack out 3-4 cooks a week on the Joe and get at least 1.5 weeks per bag. With a bit of creativity ...

ConorD, you really should take a look at a Kamado Joe before making a decision. I've just bought a classic Joe and I couldn't be happier. The new 'divide and conquer' system on the Kamado Joe was the deciding factor (along with price) for me. The flexibility it offers is miles ahead of the BGE ...

Personally, rather than firelighters I stand the chimney on top of a gas burner 10 mins and you should have flames out the top.

Or (just to be contentious) you could buy a Big Joe and lift all the internals out in one go to top up (should you need to) and save money in the process
