It sounds like you have the red propane bottle instead of a propane patio gas bottle. The red bottles are more for industrial usage. See this link https://www.calor.co.uk/shop/gas-bottles.html

I did find out that there is a safety mode that the Genesis can get into if the ignition is pressed before the gas pressure is balanced. I did try it since with a bit of improvement but still not as good as on the cast iron griddle over the hob.

I used to have both and Outback gas and charcoal bbqs. Both had seen better days and I now have a Weber Genesis E-310 and 57cm Kettle.
