Is a smoke stacker practical or bling?

I'm thinking about a vertical smoker here. Does the smoke get stale if it gathers up in the top of the smoker without a chimney/stack? or does the smoke stack allow that 'stale' smoke to gather (away from the food) until the excess is released?....or is a smoke stacker simply American bling? LOL
