It had the shoulder blade in it like the American cuts I've seen. No pics though sorry, I'll make sure to take some for my next attempt in case things go wrong again

If it had the blade bone in it was definitely a 'butt'.

Having the shoulder blade in it doesn't necessarily make it a butt, in the true sense. You could cut in umptine directions around the blade.

Even the TH butt I had wasn't quite the right cut from what I've seen. 99% though.
