Prepping wood for smoking

The prices on Ebay for wood chunks are bonkers. If I got a tree surgeon friend to do me some inch and a half rounds from oak or apple for example do I then need to season the wood? Anybody had experience and can give me some tips.

Yes you do, no hard and fast rule as it depends on the softness/hardness of the wood. I generally leave for 6-9 months.
