Postby bencops » 11 Apr 2012, 19:03

I really want to mount the lid for my large WSM on a hinge, i cant work out how though.
This would be cool but i cant find a place you can buy them or dont know how to look/what to search for

Could you not just buy a hinge from KJ or BGE and try to adapt it?

Although does the 57cm WSM have the same lip around the top as the smaller WSM? Would this not mean you'd need to cut part of the back lip off an then you might have problems sealing it

I've seen one done with gate hinges. It was either on the virtual weber bullet or the brethren.

You don't need to cut the lip off. The lid will lift before its horizontal movement is enough to catch the lip. The pivot point is offset from the lip.

can someone with a KJ tell me if the hinge mechanism looks like it could be removed from the bands and fastened to a 22.5" WSM please?

It looks to me like you could just remove the bands and you could screw it into the body and lid? Not sure about the curvature.

Curvature isn't going to be the issue, you can user spacers to get your fit right.

Buuuuuuut, with that design you might get issues with the lip. The point of rotation looks lower than the gate hinge designs I've seen. You might get horizontal motion immediately if you mount it how I'm thinking.

Also bolting that in my be an issue.

My gut says it won't work, sorry. But without seeing one in the flesh I wouldn't know for sure.

what if you mounted it upside down? Do you just need to get the point of rotation above the lip?

What's the bother with the bolts? Do you mean in relation to the lip.

Looking at it though, it doesn't look that hard to fabricate - just bending some sheet steel. Few bolted through right angled bits?
