Hi, I just built my first UDS and thought I'd share a great source for steel drums for those of you who live anywhere near Peckham.

I found the holy trinity of open top, food grade, and unlined drums, and a snip at £10!

Dealt with really nice guy called Bobby - 07557 671107. He keeps them in his pallet yard at 39 Consort Rd, Peckham.

They used to contain a food safe lubricant used in factories for food jars etc. There was a bit left but it wiped out really easily.

Not sure if this is the right thread to share finds, let me know if it's better off somewhere else and I'll re-post.

I'll stick up a pic of my drum once I've painted it up, although I don't expect it to be anything other than ugly

26 pounds - but delivered to my door, and with a lid and a latch to keep the lid on.

Does anyone know of a place north of London I could get one of these?

Sorry, don't know anywhere in north London. This was another place I was considering before I found my man. A bit way out east for you maybe.

Bobby's drums also come with the same lid clasp as on your photo.

Even if you aren't going to make a UDS they'd make a good charcoal bin

Quite true - if I do get to the point where I bulk buy charcoal, this eBay drum with lid and seal should be air-tight and keep the charcoal nice and dry.

I've worked it out that it's just cheaper than the plastic boxes I'm using to store my charcoal, not a lot in it though so I would probably have gone for a drum (had my brain been working) then the plakky boxes. So saying the boxes do allow you to seperate types easier.

Cheaper still, if you have the wood, the space and the inclination you can make your own charcoal in an oil drum:

And if you have the space, access to free wood and the local by-laws don't prevent you doing it

Oh I wasn't aware of those. Not that I was planning trying anything in London - I'd be as worried about the neighbours as the bylaws
