Nice to be here from sunny Carlton nr Wakefield.
My budget got me an Outback kettle which is fine for grilling but not airtight enough for low n slow.
Even when inlet and outlet vents closed they're still open :D
Still never mind maybe it can be modified.
Hope everyone is ready for questions, I've got about a million.
Cheers Kev.

Did you ever get an answer to your modifications?

I've got an offset smoker and the smoke is escaping too

Cheers

Welcome to a fellow Yorkshireman. I'm down the road a bit in Halifax. And if you haven't done so already I suggest you also join the Facebook group as well. https://www.facebook.com/groups/BritishBBQSocietyForum/

I haven't found any info on mods as the Outback kettle is probably not a product that automatically springs to mind.
It's not a Weber and based on the price I don't think it pretends to be anything other than a budget kettle.
It's just little things really, like having to line the bowl with foil to funnel the drips into the ash catcher as otherwise they run down a tiny gap between the kettle body and the catcher and there isn't a stable platform underneath to stand a catch pail and the bottom vent doesn't close sufficiently well to reduce air flow, again foil may come to the rescue here.
The lid is a snug fit, the grills seem decent and have a hinged access section and the top vent is adequate.
The temp gauge as you would expect is miles out with no means of adjustment but for smoking you would no doubt be using a proper remote thermometer.
I've got some apple wood from a local orchard so I might still have a go at low and slow.
If nothing else it does a mean burger.

Where are you getting the escapes? If its round the doors then just got to your nearest fire place supplier and buy a length of fire rope which you glue round the edge. You might need a couple of different thicknesses for the hinge and latch sides.
