Although there is urban regeneration ongoing in that area it's still somewhere I would be wary of visiting. (Info from "the food taster whose family is still in 'akney) Maybe our local contact hackneybbq could provide an insight :?:

come on Keith...the best BBQ always comes from the Ghetto.... regeneration = gentrification......class war BBQ....EAT THE RICH,,,,, Hoxton, [up the road from Hackney and home to The Red Dog Saloon] used to be well rough and a great place to live. Now gentrified and sterile like Shoreditch, its boring as hell and full of tossers in suits. However its name derives from Hogs Den when it was the home to the swine herders of the old city. Hackney may have its problems but hey ho..I'm afraid I'd choose inner city over Hertfordshire anyday!

I have a real soft spot for Hackney as I spent a few years there when squatting was still legal. Great parties from what I can remember. Still haven't regained the brain cells I lost though,,,,

A friend of mine (and fellow Q junky) just sent me the link to this place - Will have to check it out.
There's nothing really dodgy about that part of town any more - Admittedly, I wouldn't stroll in to the Hackney estates on my own, late at night, but De Beauvoir Town is full of trendy East London media types and trustafarians (masquerading as struggling artists) these days, a la Shoreditch and Hoxton.
Definitely worth a trip up there - Seems to be a mini Q explosion in London at the moment.
