Hi,

I know that New York isn't best known for it's bbq but i'm going over for some pre Christmas shopping with the Mrs and i was wondering if anyone knew of any good bbq restaurants and also any good shops for bbq equipment in Manhattan?

Thanks,

Hi

A couple I have wanted to try but never got round to ...

Southern Hospitality ...http://www.southernhospitalitybbq.com .... Dr BBQ (Ray Lampe) is the Executive Chef of this place.

Daisy May's ... http://www.daisymaysbbq.com ... The owner won The Jack in 2008.

Hope you have a great trip.

When I last went to NY (about 18 months ago), I did some extensive research into exactly the same question. And suprisingly there are some good BBQ restaurants in Manhattan, and not only that my favourite was just off times square (I know, I thought here we go, complete tourist trap). However, I visited this restaurant 2x and both times it was excellent. The chicken wings were excellent as a starter and the meat platter (I think its the pig out and it was under $30) was a taster of everything and could easily feed 2 was a really good way to experience all meats. Still seems to get solid reviews on the web. Give it a go is my recommendation. Its Called Virgils

The other restaurant I went to was Brother Jimmy's. The deep fried onions were out of this world but the BBQ was average at best. http://www.brotherjimmys.com. Saying that it was still better than Bodeans

Blue smoke has good reviews, I have never visited it the restaurant, but chums have and said food was good, but a little pricy (ie upmarket bbq?). http://www.bluesmoke.com

Have a great trip!

I would love to visit Blue Smoke as it has Mike Mills connections so if you visit please let us know how it was.

Thanks for all the posts, i never knew there was that much bbq in New York.

I'm glad we booked a couple of extra days so this will give us a chance to taste all of these places, or at least have a good go at it. :D

I went to Hill Country recently.

It's on 30 West 26th Street
T: 212 255 45 44

It's had some great reviews and by god, their brisket was a thing of magic. It's a Texan BBQ pit/smokehouse. You buy a meal ticket and ask for what you want, they rip off a big of wax paper and slap the meat on a scale, screw up the paper and hand it to you with the ticket stamped.

I loved it.

Moist Brisket
Lean Brisket
Beef Shoulder
Back Rib
Prime Rib

etc etc

Their beans and mac & cheese were pretty ace too.
