The perfect all round BBQ craft Beer

Postby BoneCandyBBQ » 21 Jul 2016, 09:00

So far my favourite has been the Abita Brown made in Louisiana.
Hard to get over here in the UK but damn, what a match.
First discovered it at Hometown BBQ in Redhook Brooklyn NYC.

Best all rounder I have found in the UK is the Beavertown 8 Ball - Red Rye IPA
And Crate IPA both North Ldn

Looking something a bit more brown with solid fruit/caramel notes to stand up to and compliment smoke.

Keen to hear if anyone has found anything that stands out

I prefer lighter IPA's such as Jaipur (waitrose or online), Iguanitas, Shipyard and Citra are all good ones

Hmm yeah, I think the light IPA's are pretty decent at balancing out and cutting through fats but as a food match i feel they often lack the sort of malty backbone to stand up to the smoke.

If you get a chance to grab a Beaverton 8 Ball I'd love to know your thoughts chap

Flowers Original is quite a light beer.

You should try Hobsons 'Explorer' IPA. It's got good tropical fruit hop flavour and a caramel sweetness that really stands up to the smoke. 5.6%, in 330ml cans only. You can get it in some co-op stores, but they sell on-line too.

Beavertown's original two beers were developed to match the dishes at Duke's Brew & Que:

"To complement the restaurant’s smokey surroundings Logan creates the 8 Ball Rye IPA to pair with the spice and rub being used on the pork ribs, and The Smog Rocket Smoked Porter to accompany the smoked, molasses and char of the beef ribs. "

Love Beavertown beers, particularly their Gamma Ray IPA. First discovered it at the Hanging Bat in Edinburgh, a craft beer/smokehouse pub that I was keen to check out. I tried their pulled pork which was very stringy and mushy and when I asked the chef how he cooked it he told me that he uses leg of pork! Their brisket chilli was acceptable though but the beers are definitely the highlight.

The best beer for a bbq is a cider....did I mention that I live in Dorset? :)
