A day at the races

Postby esselle » 14 Jul 2011, 21:50

Just got home from a fantastic day at Cartmel racecourse. Toby has, again, been working hard on behalf of the society to arrange a Bbqs competition there and was invited to attend their BBQ themed raceday today, but because he has taken a, much needed, family holiday he asked me to fill in and represent the society.
What a day!
I was asked to judge the best BBQ/picnic area and award the prize to the winner. Then interviewed by the race announcer about the Bbbqs and what we do. Then taken to have lunch as guest of lord and lady cavendish ( the owners of the racecourse and surrounding area), where there were owners and trainers galore.
At lunch the announcer/tipster passed on his tips for the 7 races. I ignored his first tip and won. Then followed his others and won 3 more times and finished the day £125 up!
The racecourse manager had arranged to name the last race 'the British BBQ society hurdles handicap' and I was asked to choose the best turned out horse prior to the race, which involved being in the paddock up close with the horses. Following that I was invited with another director to the top of the central viewing tower to watch 'our' race. What a veiw! My horse won! It was quickly back to the paddock whilst the horses were being cooled down. I then was invited on to the podium to present champagne to the winning owner, trainer and rider! Not only that but it was off to the winners marquee to enjoy a drop of champers with them all!
The outcome of this is that the racecourse owner and manager and directors have made it clear that they are 'more than keen' to host a Bbbqs competition there next year. They are fantastic people and the area couldn't be better, a tiny little village in the beautiful lake district. Not sure yet when the competition will be but it will be tied in with a raceday so if anyone needs any tips.....
I, for one can't wait for this competition to come along. You will all love it!
