Re: The winds of change
I was gonna have a big burn in them anyway. And ive seen this black paint you can buy for bbqs and stoves thats heat proofe so I was gonna paint inside and out with that. Im excited to get the project started. So everything on here is really helping. Cheers.

Are you basically advocating doing a burnout - but not removing the orange epoxy/paint from the inside of the drum? Then removing the outside paint and using heat resistant paint on the outside?BigG wrote:http://www.bbbqs.com/Forum/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=1834

Re: The winds of change
From what I have read on google is have a long very hot burn in the bin which will remove yhe paint inside and out removing all the paint. Then to was it out with water and then paint it with the heat proof paint. Ive not seen any reference about painting inside just a guess from the photo's I have been looking at.
I was thinking about using a galvanised garden incinerator because again I have seen and
Read lots on it, i was advised on here not to do that. But further reading told me that as long as the meat doesn't come into contact with the bin it should be ok. There will be zink deposits on the meat but very slightly but zink is good for you.
Then I was thinking if the inside was painted with the black wood burning stove paint then it should be ok?
Its hard to decided what the best route to go is. Its going to be fun finding out

It may be fun but PLEASE bear in mind that the advice given by the posters is usually from experience! Whilst learning new skills is worthwhile sometimes it's better to learn from other people's experience.

DON'T paint inside the drum, the black looking stuff you have seen is an accumulation of smokey goodness due to long cooks and proper seasoning of the pit!!!!!!!!!!
DONT USE GALVANISED METALS!!!!!!!!! ESPECIALY AS THE FIREPIT!!!!!!!!!!!

Old washing machine drum, cut down beer drum, old shopping basket(Pref Tescos, I hate those SOB's). One of the guys on here made one out of an old mattress, no doubt someone can post the link when they see this post.
Use an old BBQ as the firepit, just not anything Galv.
