First attempt at pulled pork.
First attempt at pulled pork.
So I had my first attempt at pulled pork at the weekend after buying a new bbq. I have to say it was a success... not a complete success but a success none the less!
I initially had a few problems getting the coal briquettes to light (and had them go out after a couple of hours) but I put that down to not having enough fire lighters and everywhere by me having run out!
But I did eventually get them going and managed to keep it going for a good 10/11 hours. I also gave it a couple of extra hours in the oven wrapped in foil with apply juice poured over it. I used a 2.5kg pork shoulder joint from Tesco and followed a recipe in ""Slow Fire" is the beginners guide to real barbecue." with a home made rub and a home made bbq sauce which I added to some of it after it was cooked.
I don't have a meat thermometer so had to do everything by eye but had no troubles with that (I tend to do most of my cooking that way anyway). It came out very tender with just the right amount of smokey flavour – even my misses who doesn’t particularly like bbq enjoyed it!
I’ll definitely be doing pulled pork again and next time I'll remember to get fire lighters in advance!

Get a charcoal chimney and you'll never have to deal with firelighters again! Glad the first attempt was a success

My father-in-law to be said he was one of those I can 'borrow' lol. Will have to get it before my next bbq (probably this weekend!).

Nice one Grim, sounds delicious, it got me juices flowing, so I'm off to Tesco tomorrow for some pork to pull.

http://wolfepit.blogspot.co.uk/2009/10/ ... f.html?m=1 - you gotta try this! Only took about 4 hours of smoke and 1.5 hours in the oven so it's a nice, quick alternative to pulled pork. I've currently got a rolled brisket joint from Asda in the smoke, it's gonna end up in a Dutch oven overnight making chilli

Good job Grim, glad it turned out well.
As Dave says a charcoal starter is an absolute must, if you cant borrow one its the best £17 you will ever spend on BBQing. The weber ones last for years.

Love the look of this recipe - especially the use of Guinness! Although I think it needs more than 1 bottle - 1 for the cooking and extra for drinkingYetiDave wrote: http://wolfepit.blogspot.co.uk/2009/10/ ... f.html?m=1 - you gotta try this!
And rust or no rust I'll be getting a hold of a charcoal chimney asap!

My chimney's more rust than anything else now (it's only a cheap one) but it still works fine. 3 sheets of newspaper's usually plenty to get the coal going
