Re: Kamado for Christmas.?
Speaking of DIY forced inductions anywhere I can get a comprehensive set of instructions and 'ingredients' needed that I get get easily in the UK. As I want to have a go at making one which is hopefully cheaper than a pre made one.
Sorry for going off topic.

I'm fairly certain I posted the parts and circuit on here ages ago.
You need to eBay some parts from china but it's such an easy project.

I'm making my own too, but not Pi, i'm using an Arduino. Still weaking it, and now have an Arduino Yun which is a bit more powerful and includes an embedded Linux host and Wifi - so I might move to that.
It's just a matter of time, and fiddling around
One thing I might add - it is not necessarily cheaper to do your own - but certainly more fun.

Thanks for all your input. I already own a iq 110 from my pro q excel so that'll give me the control.. So I think it's gonna be a KJ classic
Does anyone use an electric charcoal lighter or weed burner to start their charcoal?

People have commented on using the "garden flame thrower", others balance the charcoal chimney on a camping stove, or gas hob I use paper/firelighters with my chimney. Another post was asking about the electric fire starter and the reply was not in favour of one.

I still very much like the weber charcoal chimney.
Re: Kamado for Christmas.?
I use a weedburner to start mine if I want to get it going quickly, also depends on the type of charcoal.. if I'm using lumpwood that takes fairly easily using just the chimney starter and a couple of loads of paper, but heat beads.. well they need a little extra... persuasionawesselbaum wrote:Does anyone use an electric charcoal lighter or weed burner to start their charcoal?

You won't regret the KJ purchase
You need a different adapter for the IQ for the Kamado - but I did a DIY version very cheaply.
To light, I buy B&Q natural fire lighter cubes. Two of those with lump wood works every single time in all weathers.

Well, I am a recent KJ convert, originally I lusted after a BGE and as lovely as they are I couldnt justify the price vs the KJ. There was a special 10% off Greenhouse Warehouses and they had some ex-demo units for £579. I snagged a brand new un, cover, heat deflector, cover and pizza stone for £660 which was a cracking deal.
I have pretty much trialled every type of cooking method, direct, indirect, smoking, pizza. It handles everything I have thrown at it and is on a par with the WSM for charcoal usage.
In short BUY NOW
