hahaha That is true. I did have it take off once. I now always peg down the legs and all the support strings and it's pretty rock solid.

I like your set up Chris. I have thought about putting up a shed and using that (With an added chimney and extra vents of course!).

Keith, we drilled holes in the patio and screwed the gazebo down. Could you not do something similar?

The plan always was to vent the chimney out through the roof in some appropriate way. However, in use, I found the smoke wasn't much of an issue - the overlapping timber of the roof works well to keep water out, but the smoke just goes through it easily.

At one point, I was even considering building a box into the roof, and ducting the chimney through it, for cold smoking simultaneous with the hot smoking. But then I was introduced to the ProQ Cold Smoker, and I didn't bother.

They are beautiful and very much the object of a dream. I'd considered building one but not too sure on the roofing material and it's fireproof credentials. When I was working in SA it seemed just about everyone has a lapa. Not so much to shelter from the rain in my experience though! I like to use a chiminea here to help with the temperature.

Maybe the gazebo idea will work. It's the right time of year to find one in a sale I suppose.

As we know I am no DIY expert but I fear your parasol based drilling incident to be utter folly......

From the info so far it is a paving based arrangement, surely what will happen at the first meaningful blow is that you will have a whirling parasol with an barely attached broken paving slab to "up the ante" in the property disassembly and physical harm stakes?

Whereas your position now is that of a man with shattered wood and cloth based parasol carnage, I see the creation of a sail powered paving slab / concrete lump based wmd to be ill advised.

I think your best bet for a fuller flavour is the deep drilled tubular affair set in a plenty big concrete ensemble. If that comes up chances are your house has been blown over and you are all dead anyeay so the destruction of your garden drops down the old crityicality list........

No expert but this would be the way I would go,

No problems with fire - they are either an artificial thatch, or natural thatch treated with fire retardants.

But pricey....

Quality comes at a price. Fire retardant thatch is very interesting though.

Maybe a gazebo base could be bolted to a substrate underneath paving slabs?

Well we get some tremendous winds at times where we have lost slates off the roof (and a chimney pot), but the patio and gazebo have never moved.
I would expect the gazebo to rip apart before it lifted up the slabs.................

Tiny as always mate your sagacious sermons fill me with much needed mirth & merriment, the gazebo is naked at this stage awaiting drying out prior to winter storage, the cover already being in the shed. Keep those erudite brain cells working old bean and espouse at your pleasure, to our delight.
