Isn't this something to do with a French shipwreck during the Napolean Wars??? Something about the only survivor being a monkey and the locals not knowing a monkey from a Frenchman so they hanged it from a ship????

I heard the same story from my Geordie Sgt Major when I was a Junior Leader back in the early 90's.
