See if you can find a stock sized one which you can adapt to your needs. Otherwise, perhaps some stainless steel (or regular steel) expanded metal mesh might work for you. You may have to buy a larger size than you need, but it is easily cut with an angle grinder or hacksaw.

I've not used any places myself - so your Google-foo would be just as good as mine. Just avoid anything galvanised. Go for stainless, or plain steel.

Also try ebay - as many of the places online tend to sell lager quantities than you may need. Try your local builders yard, or wickes/b&q, garden centres, farm shops too - never know what they might have. Some people use this stuff for chicken/rabbit coops.

Could also try your local tip - people throw away all manner of stuff. You might have slip the guys there fiver to take anything away though ;)

I would say you want mesh that is 2-3mm thick at least (perhaps more). A 1-inch mesh might work ok for you depending on what you are cooking.

Do a Google search for steel suppliers near you, I got the expanded steel for my coal basket from them and they have lots of different styles, widths and materials of it, just tell them your after some expanded steel or weld mesh a couple of mm thick with the holes not too big and tell them what you plan to do with it, they should see you right.
