I'll be going along tonight and will be taking down prices for different cuts of meat. If anyone is interested in going and would like to know what cost what. Just let me know and I'll find out for you.

Went last night and spent the whole morning vac packing.

The price's that may interest you are as follows:

Chicken thighs: 10kg box 17.00 = 1.70 per kg, I counted 73 in the box.
Pork butts: 2.20 per kg
Brisket: 4.00 per kg these were 2 briskets in a vac pack with flat and point and a nice bit of fat on. I asked the young man to give me a price of a vac pack and it worked out just under 40.00. There were other briskets but only flats and not much fat.
Ribs were nearly being given away at 1.00 per kg, had a good look at these but not much meat. More for personal and catering rather than competition.

I found that you do have to walk the whole length a couple of times as the price prices were so different. At one end you had a 10kg of chicken breast at 38.00 and I ended up buying some for 33.00. I believe that these will cost you 40.00 at bookers.

Got any names of good vendors? Are all the prices on display, or do you basically have to ask everyone what the price is?

Also - what about the transport - can you park there to cart it all away?

What time did you go there - I thought it was an early morning place like Billingsgate.

I don't know any poor butchers Eddie, lots that have gone out of business though

Aris it is/was a night job, from memory around midnight onwards, though Eddie will be able to provide exact tmes. Being located near St Barts hospital it has to be clean and tidy again for the city gents to meander through. As a for instance the pubs stopped selling breakfasts at 7am, and I'd be back in bed at 3-30 in Teddington having been dropped of by my boss so it's a very early morning job

3am it seems. Cheap parking available too. I wonder if it s wise to bring a trolley of some sort

I suspect that unless you need large quantities, it is probably more worthwhile to go to booker.

Back to the old debate, anyone can use Smithfield not everyone can use Bookers and as Eddie says the prices are good at Smithers

Aris I just went to the ones that were giving the best deals. As for the prices some do and some don't, I felt like the ones that didn’t have prices displayed had the better deals. Transport, got to really take a car that time of the morning/night call it what you will. Parking is available outside the market, best to get a space before 02:00 and you don't have to pay as long as you are out of there by 07:00. Congestion charge doesn’t apply. I was told that you couldn’t buy anything before 03:00 but that didn’t look like it. When you’re buying 10kg box's I thought it would be best to take my very large cool box that I could wheel around. My friend that I was with took the pi_s out of me, but by the time we got back to the car he took his comments back.

I have found that it is very easy for me to purchase meat once a month as it is only 30 minutes drive from where I work and finishing in the early hours helps. I will be buying my competition meats from Smithfield’s as I can save up to half price but that that don't mean that I will not continue to support my local butcher.
