I am just starting out but fully intend on making my own rubs. I bought a BBQ rub from Bookers the other day and I have to say that I do not like it. I think its the smoked Paprika in it which is putting me off, it is also not very well ground so the flakes are quite big on the meat. I have been on the hunt for a local supplier of onion powder which I have seen commonly used in rub recipes. Having said that, I am intending (if my plans pan out) on doing a shoulder tomorrow and am going to try a simple salt and black pepper rub with a little garlic granules and (unsmoked) paprika.

Cotsherbs are a well priced online supplier of just about any culinary herbs and spices. I have also followed aris' suggestion of visiting ethnic grocers who are often cheaper than supermarkets and due to their turnover often fresher than supermarkets.

I have made rubs from recipes in books so they probably don't count as my own, but I have used just S&P then built on it with garlic, onion etc. to my taste so saying I still have and probably always will have propriatory blends as I like their flavour and I'm not one for wheel inventing.

If you are looking for onion powder, i think we call them onion granules here, you can get them from sainsburys

Same with garlic powder as well. Someone correct me if I'm wrong

You can get onion & garlic in powder forms, even as onion and garlic salt and garlic in many other forms.

I pretty much always make rubs these days. Normally start with a recipe from online or from a book then tweak it a) according to my taste b) what spices/herbs I've got in stock/can get hold of.

I usually make my own. Sometimes I do a basic salt, pepper, sugar, garlic salt, onion salt. Then add things like celery salt or cayenne. I love usingasmoked paprika or chipotle flakes.

Or I go from books. I so like to experiment and so far not been let down.

There are plenty of online spice wholesalers who are really well priced. But also bookers has a good selection in big tubs.

I haven't tried any bramded rubs yet. I bought a butt rub from grill stock but it remains un opened still.

I do think though simple is best.

Something I have learnt over the last few cooks is just how much a good rub can impact the end result.

Or perhaps how much a bad one can tarnish it!
