With so many posts about pork butt I thought it deserved a topic of its own;

Has anyone found a reliable supply of the Boston Butt? Unless I visit the butcher it seems a little hit and miss with the supermarket.

It isn't always convenient to call in at the farm shop so any ideas on more readily accessible sources?

I am sure their is plenty of online farms near you? I know a few around Taunton that I use,but my Butcher always has spare ribs (butts) on the counter.

Booker do cases of what they call frozen collars.They're like a boneless butt. I believe there's still a post on the forums about them somewhere. Toby made pulled pork with them. I've used them myself, very consistent product and being frozen means they're convenient. You're obviously losing a little quality over the fresh from a butcher ones though.

They call it a frozen neck fillet. It is 37.99 for a 13.6kg box. They tend to freeze them in one large block, though there is some plastic sheeting in there to help separate them, they are not individually frozen which may make it difficult to separate just one. I did once buy a box once and they were individually vac-packed - so basically luck of the draw. I use these to make sausage - they have a pretty perfect fat content for that.

Morrisons quite often has bone-in (blade) pork shoulder. It is not my local store, so I only go there if I am passing, but when I see it I normally pick up a couple for the freezer, so I always have at least one available for when I want to do pulled pork.

I've also seen it recently in Tesco, but although it is bone-in shoulder, it tends to be the smaller picnic end; at least in my store.

What morrisons are we talking about here Chris? Stamford or the one in Walton? May have to pop in and have a look.

Also I've used the Tesco ones in both of my PP cooks and they have done the job for my needs. The tesco shoulders generally cost around £8 for 2.5ish KG i think?

Simon (Cyderpig) showed me some and those were individually vac-packed, he uses them on his cooks and gets on well with them. A recent post states that Berkshire Meatpackers have the butts in their bulk orders section now.

I think I have seen them in both, at different times. The one I frequent more is the Walton one; but my company's office is in Oakham, so if I go over there, I often pop into Stamford on the way back home.

We all seem to struggle with "Butts" and the subject always comes up with the same list

Main supermarkets Occasionally
Costco, bookers etc. have them usually, frozen in bulk sometimes
Online. Suppliers not nationwide, delivery iffy
High st butchers. Not unless you educate and convince, most unwilling.
Farm shop butchers. Possibly, sometimes good suppliers.

I am becoming a bit manic, and am calling at every butcher I pass, much to the annoyance of my family. But, I have found a specialist butcher attached to a farm who has taken the information on US style joints and seems interested. If it works out I will let the location be available (might be usefull to people near to Bolton).

Keith is talking about the Bookers Collar Joints.
They are very good value for money, come individually vac packed, they are all pre trimmed and of even weight.
They cook up well.
