Wood chips, on the coals or in an iron pot?

On a recent search on the net I saw a few people who use a cast iron pot with a lid to hold their wood chips within the hot coals for smoking; apparently this extends the the smoking time of the wood rather than it just burning away so quickly directly on the hot coals (Soaked in water or not).
They drill small holes in the lid of the pot to allow the smoke to escape.
Let me know if anyone has any thoughts on this method?

I chuck them straight on, but to be honest I have an endless supply of them.
I think using the iron pot or even foil you would get more smoke for longer as they would take more time to burn away.

Well I think I'm going to pick up a pot and send some photos of the mods I carry put on it and how it performs in the smoker

the thing I do is use a clay pot with holes in the top. Then there is no need for water because the clay takes in the heat and also sets of the chips. Its not for everyone, but Im not a big fan of useing a water try anyways. I learned useing a thick clay bowl from my grandfather and love useing. give it a try see what you think.

Indeed. Clay is the way, I've been doing it and spreading the word all season.

I use to use one on my Gas BBQ but now just throw the soaked chips onto the coals.
The one I had was bought from Halfords in their end of season sale a few years ago.
It worked very well on the Gas BBQ.

Instead of buying a box for this you'll get a similar affect, if you warp your wood chips in thick tin foil and stab a few holes in the top.

Me too exactly what I do. I gave up on the freebie smoke box that came with my Frontier as with the water bowl in (I use the clay saucer method with this rather than water I might add

) it could be a fight getting the thing in and out...foil pouches are just easier imho
