1st every start up

I'm going to lite my WSM for the first time at the weekend. Thinking of doing a test run first so I can get the hang of controlling the temp.Im going to be using heat beads but unsure if the minon method is the correct thing to do ?? Will using heat beads with this method spoil my food ??
