Smokey clothes

Feel free to ask any questions, one of the experts will certainly respond, don't be afraid to ask anything, we were all beginners at some point.

Smokey clothes

Post by AndyHull »

Hi all,

Not sure if this is a stupid question or has been asked before so sorry in advance.

Every time i fire the OTP up and use it for low & slow or grilling i end up with my clothes stinking of smoke, is this normal and do you guys end up the same?

The reason i ask is because my OH gets quite annoyed that she has to go in when i start it up and says i should have bought a gas bbq!!! :o (im not saying there's anything wrong with gas)

Ever wondered why teams where logo'd tee shirts ;) Certainly I will get a change of clothes if there are guests coiming round, but there really shouldn't be that much smoke, granted you will smell the meat cooking and a wonderful smokiness associated with it.

Yep it's normal. TBH it's one of the things I least like about smoking food. It seems impossible not to end up smelling like you've smoked yourself. What I've tended to do is do my smoking in either old clothes or clothes that are due to go into the wash anyway, then I change when it is time to eat. Can't say I particularly get this for grilling or at least it is less noticeable.

Right so it's normal then, i wasn't sure i was doing something wrong at the lighting stage!
The chimney smokes like crazy though when first lit for about 5 to 10 mins then it stops we only have a small garden so i can't even position it further away from the house to get the smoke away.
I stopped using news paper to light it as i stunk of smoke using that, i use the bbq lighter cubes undernieth the chimney now and tend to be slightly less smokey as a result

I find the the charcoal dust causes more smoke than the briquettes themselves, and if I tip the bag into the chimney it always smokes more than when I get rid of the dust (Poundshop colandar).

I have also found one way to reduce the smoke from the chimney a little is to pour some cooking oil on the briquets and i tend to get more flame reducing the smoke quite a bit.
A bit wastefull but the oil is only a bout £1 for a litre!

I love the smell and if they bottled it I would wear it every day. Not sure if the wife would feel the same but o well.

No it's normal.

Women naturally do not have the same amount of glands in their nose and mouth as men and are generally affected by strong smells more than men, this is not the same with all women I might add.

Think about it, a bloke walks out of the loo with a smile on his face and a paper under his arm "All yours love", the lady then walks in and seconds later leaves said toilet (sometimes runs screaming) with an unimpressed look on their face muttering profanities.

It's just the way they are made, don't judge yours, keep hold of her for a few more months, if the problem persists then perhaps look at getting a different model.
