Should I buy the Maverick ET73 for a ProQ Amigo?

Hi all! I'm looking for some advice regarding a gift for my other half.

I bought him a ProQ Amigo last year and he's had lots of fun experimenting since, but with hit or miss results. Quite often our pulled pork ends up more like Sunday roast! I've been reading up on the Maverick wireless thermometer and wondered if anyone could tell me if this would be compatible - I'm not sure if there are any holes for the probes to go through?? I hope someone can help - I'd ask my other half but I'd like it to be a surprise!

The mavericks are a great bit of kit that will monitor both the food and the temperature of the smoker.I've had no bad experiences using mine.
Regarding holes in the smoker, when I bought my mavericks the holes in the ProQ Excel (big brother to the amigo) were ever so slightly too small for the probes and had to be filed out slightly. An easier way is just popping them through the top vent. I can recommend getting some cable ties to fix the "sender" part of the maverick to the handle if you dont have anywhere to stand it. Speaking from experience its quite easy to knock off if not secured in some way

The Maverick is a magnificent piece of equipment.takes away the guessing.
The question about it fitting has been answered above,I use it in my kettle thru the vent.

They are great pieces of equipment - as has been said, it takes the guess work out of it and also means that you can gain some sleep if you are going to do any overnight cooks because you can set alarms to tell you if a) the grill temperature goes above or below a user-set temperature or b) when the food hits a target temperature.

Personally this has really helped me get some decent results on low 'n' slows until I get more experienced & can do it by touch / intuition / magic

It's a great present I CAREFULLY crimped my probes (they can't touch you for it you know ) to fit the holes with no problems.

I use a Maverick ET 732, Before I purchased the devise I was reading that the ET 73 had problems with it. So I went for the newest model at that time and it's been fantastic. I don't know what prices you have been quoted ? why not put an ad in the wanted section for a new devise, as a member might have one and at a very good price?

Eddie - I found it on smokingbbq.co.uk, £51 for the ET73 or £70 for the ET732. Is that a good price? I was going to go with the ET73 since I don't think we need the longer range, but maybe I should reconsider if there are issues with the older model.

I think the issues were with the newer model - to do with the probes. That's why I went for the older cheaper model. Hope I got that correct...!

With respect to range, this will be dependent on your own house / palace! I think that if you are using it in a normal sized house, you won't have problems. Our Kamado is at the back of the house and our bedroom at the front i.e. the furthest possible point. I have no problems with connection. If you have a really long garden at the end of which is your smoker and a really big house and you are the furthest end from the smoker, then yep, go for the newer model as it may struggle with this.

i would but remember they are not without a short life seem to burn out quickly
