It is as Aris pointed out the drink of Astronauts - if its good enough for them then that's good enough for me. No real urgency Keith just came across it whilst researching the secret ingredient that Harry says guarantees moist tender BBQ, perfect bark, crispy skin, sunny skies, long life, happiness and a glossy coat. Who knew you could get that from crumbled up dog biscuits.

I don't think it's meant to be sceret. It's a colouring basically - a drink powder with lots of artificial colours in it. A tablespoon of tang makes one 8-ounce glass.aris wrote:They did during the Apollo missions - which put he product on every kids breakfast table in America at the time.keith157 wrote:Isn't that the drink Astronauts use?

"In addition to the stunning color, it leaves a very faint sweet orange note (desirable I think) to your meat. "

These are the colourings

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tartrazine
A 2007 study showed a link with hyperactivity from both colourings:

As a result they have been largely removed from foods on sale in the UK, and there are compulsory warning labels for both colourings.
Despite their names both Sunset Yellow and Tartrazine are actually orange colourings.
It's not really clear that they are or are not nasties, however the FSA suggest using paprika, annatto, beta carotene, lycopene (tomato skin colouring), as well carmine, which is a cochineal derivative and anti-oxidant. Carmine binds strongly to protein and works well with meat. These ribs are coloured with carmine:
