What did you spray it with?

Thanks! I just went for a chicken as I'm still finding my feet with it, but I managed to control the temp pretty well and it came out nicely. I'll do a shoulder when I get my PartyQ in the post.

I sprayed the outside with BBQ paint, about £7 on amazon. The inside got a rub down with veg oil which seasoned it on the first burn.

I'm about to start my UDS. How any tins of paint did it require?

It took 3 of these: http://www.amazon.co.uk/400ml-Stove-BBQ ... 328&sr=8-1

but my technique was quite liberal! You might get away with 2 :)

Good luck with the build. Do you have a drum yet? Is it lined etc? What are you using for a fire basket?

Yes got a lined drum. I think I will have a go a using it lined as mentioned in another thread. For basket I will try this

viewtopic.php?f=29&t=2527

It may need some modification though to let the ash out the bottom.

I am picking up my grates/grills this afternoon.

My UDS will be fully electronically controlled with a home made arduino forced air system. Good times!

How did you get on? If it's finished, let's have a look!

Very impressed with your home made temp control. How easy was it to put together?

I got my partyq in the post today, after having to pay £37 import duty! Worth every penny though, it's miraculous. Got some tomatoes smoke drying in there at the mo.

Not got all bits n pieces yet - but I got my fire basket going.

Also have my blower which is battery operated. Will interface it to the arduino via a relay. I've been spending a fair bit of money on this - in the end I could probably have got a wsm :-)

Yes the fire basket is that big. Hopefully not too big - will see!

Here is the blower I got:

http://www.dealextreme.com/p/outdoor-bb ... -aa-133046

Has a 22mm SS pipe to interface to the UDS. Will need a 22 to 15 reducer.

As his will be totally fan operated, I will only have one hole in it - a 15mm one at the bottom. At the top I'm thinking of using the weber lid, but it is not an exact fit.

Once this is done, I will need to do some careful burns to see how oscilate the blower to keep temperatures steady. There is some PID code for arduino - but I'm going to keep it simple at first.

I'm in no rush.

But this has more soul than a WSM!

I think that home made fire basket is a better bet than the b&q one, airflow wise.
Where did you find your expanded metal lath? Mine's flimsier, I wouldn't mind changing it out for some of yours.

The arduino stuff sounds impressive but I'll leave it to you!
