Wood suppliers in the UK
Wood suppliers in the UK
Despite living in the "green and pleasant land", I find it difficult to get a good source of wood. I can buy, from a local sawmill, bags of rough cut generic hardwood. Mostly oak and birch, but often indecipherable, and always needs cutting down with an axe, which whilst not overly arduous, is a little annoying when I'm paying for it!
I've seen a number of websites offering smoking wood, some ridiculously priced and others more reasonable. Any pointers to preferred suppliers please? Ideally I am after chunks, not chips. I find chips burn out within minutes no matter how long I soak them.

Thanks Keith! Looks exactly what I'm after - he has the three woods I want too!

Mac's as in http://www.smokingwoods.co.uk ?
I'd seen them before, but they sell chips, not chunks, and seems rather pricey compared to Paul's. Paul's site seems to suggest a rough box weight of 10kg, for £10-£20 depending on wood type, whereas Mac's is £10 for 1kg! Unless I'm reading it wrong?

Same guy new website, my apologies I was actually referring to their customer service.

Not doubting his excellent CS, just wondering if I'm reading these prices wrong (maths never was my strong point!). Anyhow, many thanks for the pointers, will be giving Paul a call as soon as I'm through the big log of cherry that I have just had donated!
Re: Wood suppliers in the UK
recently bought some wood from paul (cherry) arrived next day in a big box and the chunks are massive!!! only used two for a 4 n 1/2 hour cook and they burned for what seemed an eternity! will only need one decent size one for my next cook. HIGHLY recommend!!!

I've bought from www.druidswood.co.uk - all prices include next day delivery and they've a huge range of wood types. The chunks are damned big too!

Try emailing your local tree surgeons or gardeners. I've done this twice and has success both times. I think to them a few kilos is neither here not there if you're happy to pick it up and saw/split it yourself. I had a gardener over yesterday to do a bit of work and asked him and he's got a load of apple he said I can have and he thinks he's also got some oak, he's going to have a look. Worth a punt though obviously you don't get to choose what you get.
