Were in France last week, picked up a big bag of lump at the supermarket for €3.80, chucked a whole load on the campsite BBQ (brick-built, with tall brick chimney), had our BBQ.
French bloke turns up with a big bag of pine cones gathered around the campsite. I say 'would you like this charcoal, we are going home tomorrow and don't need it'. 'No it's ok', he said, and sets his pinecones alight. He had a huge fire with flames shooting out the the top of the 8-foot high chimney going quite swiftly.
Didn't stick around to see how it went, but found it quite amusing.
I'm sure someone has used our leftover charcoal by now.

Pine cones have alot of resin in them. I'm sure his food must have tasted awful.

used to use these to add smoke and flavour quite regularly 30 odd years ago..-
