Kamado - no more mould

Post by Chris__M »

I don't know if anyone else has suffered from mould breakouts in their Kamado. I don't know why the problem is specific to the Kamado, as I haven't had any similar problems with other grills. It may be that I don't cook so regularly on it, so there is a greater time between cooks for things to happen, but even when I go over it with a wire brush, I'd open it after a month or so, and there would be growth somewhere.

It quickly burns off, but it squicks me, so before packing it away for the winter, I put a large tray of silica gel in the main body. 3 months later, I just looked at it, and it is mould free. The gel is all green (it is the colour-change sort), so that is in the oven on a low heat to refresh it.

Thought it worth mentioning, in case it helps anyone else.

I get mould on my SS grill. But I do not clean it after use, and don't cover it either. Just burns off.

Me too in my UDS, not used it since second weekend in November, just opened the lid as was showing it to someone and there was mould on the the grill, but I don't clean it after using. When it's fired up and I get the coals on the go I shut the lid for a while and then go at the grills with a BBQ wire brush to clean it, I'm sure that will sort the mold out too.

I'll let you know, I'm using it this wekend for some ribs
