If you mean normal rivets like this:

I can't see a problem providing you have two hinges and use about 4 or 6 rivets for each side of each hinge.
I didn't have a hinge at first and it turned out to be a right pain in the R's taking the lid off and on so deffo worth the effort getting the lid hinged

Yeah that type. If my vertical smoker goes well im planning on a horizontal one. Two 45 gallon drums one above the other. All the meat smoking up top. There will be hinged doors that lift up or maybe out like car doors. . I just think rivets would look neater.

Re: To build or not to build?
I've recently build a log burner - which performs amazingly well - I would think it could have potential to make a great smoker that would last for years......Made from a 47kg gas bottle ( not calor
with the top cut off, a chimney welded on. Big door etc.
Valves welded on at the bottom, and an adjustible butterfly valve at the top.
just make sure its empty if you ever cut a gas bottle, Only real way to do that is by filling it with water
Tough to make without metal working kit though, burners, mig etc.
