thermometer advice

Hi lads

Quick question, I'm on the look out for a decent but relatively inexpensive thermometer for my bbq .
I think I'd prefer one with a wire on it as I plan on getting a smoker soon enough so that way if I have one with the cable I can leave it in the meat while smoking is taking place.

If you want cheap have a look at some of the kitchen thermometers on Amazon. They are ok on accuracy but you might have to work in Centigrade. Also last year both Aldi & Lidl had quite good thermometers one a stick and one a probe & lead type. They sold out quickly and should be back this year again.
But there is the old caveat............buy cheap...............buy often. Some of the teams on here have used Mavericks so long they're in Roman Numerals

I have a Maverick ET73 which hasn't let me down, but it's a home use only I don't compete. I've noticed a few of the new ETI set-ups around, it depends on how serious you want to be and how accomodating your finance officer is

Currently I've got an IKEA for £7.50 thermometer with wire probe. Been using it without complaint so far, even took one back under the 1 yr warranty to get it replaced after some vigourous washing jarred something loose. The only thing with these is that the max temp is 130 C, which can be a bit of a pain.

I'm working on the finance officer to upgrade, but for now my swedish solution is a cheap and cheerful alternative!

I bought a Weber one with a 'Quick Read' button for £15 when I started, big mistake, it's far from bloody quick and you end up with burnt fingers.

I just bought one from a kitchen shop for £20, it's got one probe with an armoured cable, it has a little plastic cli it sits in that has magnets on it so you can either stand it up on a table or attach it to the side of your smoker awesome...... HOWEVER, it has no off button You have to remove the battery to turn it off, what a STOOOOOPID design however, you can flip it between C and F and you can set a target temp and it will beep at you to toll you when it reaches that temp and it does read the temp quickly though.

So despite the stupid lack of on /off switch I am very happy with it

I have one right in front of me, although mine also shows the time and works as a stopwatch, a function I use more than the temp readings

They're not cheap, but I'd definitely recommend a Maverick. I went through a few cheap thermometers before I got the ET732 - two broke and one thought the ambient temperature of my freezer was in the mid 20s

Same as Keith. I have the ET73 and havent looked back, apart from the Thermopen, which is used to check final temps all my others have been put in a drawer out of the way.
