Making Bacon - DQ Curing Salts

Post by Gary Morris »

Hi Everyone
Once I have my cold smoker up and running I will be making some bacon. I was wondering if anyone knows of a UK seller of 'DQ Curing Salts'? also known as 'pink salt' I think it originates in the US. I have sourced Prague or no 1 cure, but would like to use the DQ brand. I guess I may find a US supplier willing to ship, but I'd prefer to get it here. (no customs issues etc.)

thanks
Gary

Can I suggest dropping an email to wishbox (https://www.facebook.com/WishBoxUSA) we spoke to one of their guys at Brands Hatch and they said to drop them a line if there was anything in the US that we needed. The worst they can say is "sorry no can do". :D

Gary

Prague powder 1, cure#1, pink salt 1, they are all the same, salt and nitrite, the only difference between US and UK cures is the percentage of nitrite in the mix which is a minimal difference. It's a bit like buying Nurofen for a couple of quid or just buying supermarket brand for 28p, parecetamol is parecetamol, don't waste your hard earned money on postage (unless of course it is cheaper despite being imported).

Just buy from someone like http://www.sausagemaking.org/acatalog/Cure_1.html. Or to make it simpler : http://www.sausagemaking.org/acatalog/bacon_cures.html, I am in no way affiliated to this company but do buy stuff from them, there is also Weshchenfelder who sell the same stuff.

Thanks Ped, I'll do that as the Dq route may or may not be fruitful and I'm keen to get started. Plus I can't see getting it imported being cheaper, and as you say paracetomol is paracetomol.
One of the first things on my list is Pastrami, I'll probablly send off an order from sausagemaking.org in the next few days.
