Avoid instant lighting like the plague. Whereabouts are you geographically? Maybe someone on here can suggest a local supplier. But you can't go wrong with HeatBeads.

What about the Weber briquettes...?

It claims a long constant burn, but I don't want to just pay for the name.

10kg for £11.69 seems quite reasonable though, as long as it is better than garage forecourt stuff.

Any thoughts gratefully received.

I've used the weber briquettes quite lot. Generate a lot of ash but do burn for a long time at a reasonable temp. I've used them successfully both for long smokes and also hot/fast grilling sessions. I also like heat beads but tend to by the weber ones more frequently just because I can get 10kg for a similar price to 7kg of heat beads. I would also recommend the Big K lumpwood previously mentioned by Ed.

I use the Weber briquettes as well. Same as Robin, a lot of ash. Mainly use them for the WSM, steady temps when I have got the inlets sorted, also I am happy to top up with unlit.
For fast grilling on the OTP, if I can get it, I use the restaurant grade charcoal from Booker, if not then Weber briquettes or Heatbeads.
