Homemade electric smoker?

Post by awesselbaum »

I don't know if anyone else has had any joy with this.

I am in (perhaps was) the market for a cookshack smokette or something similar that doesn't require pellets (don't want to be tied down, especially as I have access to lots of fruit trees). Don't seem to be able to get them over here (or I suspect won't come cheap if and when they do)

I have looked on some of the mod web sites (US) and they have used electric heating coils (such as brinkmann electric converter) and a thermostat that switches off before it over heats coupled with a pizza pan or cake tin sitting on top with wood chips in.
I was about to order one from the states (but wasn't confident that it wouldn't blow, due to the watts needed and our electricity systems not being the same).

Has anyone tried anything similar with success ?

I've always wanted to have a go at making one of these but just never got round to it.
