Convert a weber one touch to a smoker

Post by 1969westham »

I was wondering if anyone has converted their One touch into a smokey mountain style smoker.

I have found that when you are, for example, trying to do a beer can chicken, that the the meat is very close to the top of the lid, or the lid doesn't even sit on the base properly. I have seen the accessory that can convert the bbq into a rotisserie, so there is not an issue re adding extra height, but you want a lot more height especially if you want to do a couple of smokes at the same time.

Or is it just simpler to weigh out £300 and buy the smoker?

Any advice would be greatly received, but ideally I dont want loads of different bbqs/smokers especially if 1 can be adapted.

The rotisserie does give extra height but has two large holes in it where the rod passes through so you'd have to tape those up. I've not noticed a problem with BCC being too close to the lid, do you put the can on the charcoal grate or the grill grate?
If you can't afford a WSM, go for a ProQ or if you fancy the challenge a UDS. Once you convert your OTP to a smoker you now only have one cooking medium. Far better in my opinion to save up for a dedicated smoker or parts for a UDS.

Thanks for the info, but I was thinking that the middle piece would be removable, so I could go from bbq to smoker whenever the need arised.

I think Keith is trying to point out you still only have ONE bbq to use, yes it may be multipurpose, but you could only smoke or grill at one time. If you save up and get the smoker you will have two to use at the same time.
As for the rotisserie attachment, I just use silver foil to plug the holes. Yes I do get leakage, but not as much as through the vents.
Sometimes I put the BCC on the coal grate, to give me extra height and use the Gourmet system grate to surround it and cook other stuff on that grate.

If your struggling with the height or lack of for beercan chick just leave the top grill off , then use a stand in a drip tray and coals on one side only for indirect cooking. You can easily get two large chickens in doing it this way.Once Ive worked out how to upload pics will do so lol.
Hope that helps with the chick anyway!

for extra space/height I would cut a ring in required height out of a barrel. same like UDS are made of. it is ways cheeper than the weber stuff and it works.
