Indiegogo Arduino Offer

A few of us have been doing stuff with arduinos (and others, I realise, with Raspberry Pi).

There is an indiegogo project going on at the moment, with 9 days left, offering an arduino, with additional components, for 12 dollars including international shipping. It gets even cheaper if you buy more than one.

Thought it worth a mention here, in case anyone wants to have a play. For any serious BBQ project, you will eventually need additional items (either a network, wifi or bluetooth card for anything useful), but this is an extremely cheap way to dip your toe in the water. Although I already have one, I have just ordered 3 more, at that price.

You can get an arduino Nano off eBay for about a fiver - including delivery.

I built my controller using one of those.

You can get an UNO clone (for which this kickstarter is for) for about 7 quid inc delivery too.

It will be considerably more expensive - around 50 euros - but it's got much much more functionality. Ethernet and Wifi - plus an entire Linux host to play around with.

OK, it seems that Arduino costs have come down since I bought mine a while back.

However, the offer I pointed to still works out at just over 7 qud including delivery and breadboard, switches, leds and leads to play with. So it's not a bad deal, even compared to the prices you quote.

The benefits of open source hardware. Older stuff gets cheaper and continues to be widely used and newer stuff is created to replace it pushing the envelope even further. The arduino Yun looks awesome. I cant wait to get my hands on one. Having the arduino side to handle the probes and fans and possibly the PID, and a wifi enabled linux component to handle a web based GUI, graphing, stats, and other intelligence is spectacular. I'm thinking you could do an SNMP trap sent when my brisket ready, or at the very least, an email would be simplicity itself.

Hmmm... How about arduino temp monitoring + a servo to control the vents? That way I could monitor temps and open/close the vent accordingly from my phone while out! Tempting...

There is a chap who has made a servo-vent kit for the HeatMeter:

Seems like a simple enough device. I'm thinking you would have to do some serious PID tuning - as there is a huge delay in any temperature variation between opening and closing the valve compared to forced air.
