Would you consider BBQ a hobby?

Hi everyone,

I am an enthusiastic outdoor cook and I do consider BBQ one of my bigger hobbies (my cooking is not that advanced yet, but I'm working on it). I do, however, have other interests that probably take up just as much of my time. For instance, I love keeping up with stock markets - I usually use the site Quotenet - and do a little bit of investing while I'm at it. I've never had any big losses, but then again, I've never really had any gains either. Besides that hobby I have two dogs as well that take up a lot of time (and energy!) but I wouldn't trade them for anything in the world.

How would you categorize your bbq? A hobby? A passion? A way of living?

It's all of those terms, and more, it's a social activity, basic instinct - fire and food, some university will have a degree course in the psychology of BBQ as a lifestyle. I don't know what BBQ as a hobby means anymore, it's part of my life, sometimes a big part other times small, frustrating, fulfilling, fun!

Paul has the gist of it, for me its all of that, an extension to the kitchen and allows us to meat some great people and eat their food (one bite at a time ). I would love to do more of it and do it more often (BBQ that is), but the freezers only hold so much . I like learning new techniques, sadly I was born to learn and didn't come into the world knowing everything so am happy to learn, and enjoy doing so.

Slightly off track. I know. But I think people who cook Q have more of the Caveman gene.
If the Gas and Leccy go off grid who still gets to feed their families?
Back on track now.
To me BBQ is a hobby and a passion, which has started to take over my life since starting a catering set up.

BBQ for me is a new thing, don't get me wrong i have in the past done a bit of grilling on those disposable Q's and even more on my parents old gas grill (really old) but when i say new i mean the low and slow and the rest that goes with that.
For me right now it's become more than a hobbie as i love the whole experience that goes with it, the fire, the smoke and the smell to the point that the neighbours poke their head over the fence to see whats in the kettle this time.

So in conclusion, for me that is, it's more than a hobbie!

It has become an obsession and i think continually how i could get more from my 22" kettle and how i can integrate it into the new garden to get the most from it!

Is there something wrong with me?

For me it is a bit of a hobby (I have others which compete for my time), but mostly a means to an end. I like BBQ, and can't readily buy it - so I have to DIY. I also like entertaining - and BBQ puts a smile on my guests faces

It starts as a hobby but the more I do it the better it gets.
I love the social side of it and cooking for people. Im a dad, a fisherman, self employed and trying to get fit and squeezing in spartan races. I have a lot of hobbies but Q is maybe a bit more than that.

If it was merely something I did when I had people round to feed them, or even, without friends round, to feed myself; then I might not consider it a hobby.

But I seem to spend plenty of my own time experimenting, changing how I do things, timings, flavours etc; so when I do cook for others, it is as good as I can get it. And I get as much pleasure out of the experimenting as the eating.

So yes, for me it is a hobby. But then again, I consider cooking in general to be one of my hobbies.
