Seasoning salt is salt, MSG, garlic, paprika and a few other spices. Predominantly salt and MSG. Pretty much everyone has some MSG lurking in their cupboard, they just don't realise it! D5R is a commercial flavour enhancer that I've never seen in the shops and am curious about trying.

MSG is often demonised but it's no more unhealthy than normal salt - that is, in excess it is of course a very, very bad thing but used in moderation it is indispensible and perfectly safe :)

I have been pondering recently whether the low n slow smoking process, particularly with pork, produces natural glutamic salts, because I never use MSG in pork shoulder rubs but it has that unmistakable, unctuous, highly addictive umami moreishness I associate with MSG. Any chemists out there able to shed light on this theory?

No sugar in Johnnies, their ingredients list is "Fine grain crystalline salt, monosodium glutamate, pepper, paprika, granulated garlic and spices."

Just checked online - the no MSG version has sugar. That must be what I looked at in Costco. Where do you get yours?

I don't use it, I just went by their website's ingredient list. All the seasoning salts I've come across have a similar formula, and I have tons of dry seasonings (from various sources, Makro, local shops, supermarkets) from tomato to turmeric, salt to saffron, so I just cobble stuff together to be honest. I don't really go by recipes, just chuck stuff in and hope for the best! I find it usually comes out just as good as commercial mixes but sooooo cheap. As for MSG? Like I say, I think it's great stuff, but it almost never features in my bbq, I don't find it's necessary. Meat n smoke n spice.....oh yeah....

I'm hungry now.

I just looked at my jar, thought it said no msg, has a red circle with a line through it with msg behind it.
There is writing around the sign saying "contains no added msg"

Suppose I do use msg then :lol:
