Took the plunge and bought myself a weber smokey mountain...whey!
Was just wondering if anyone could recommend a digital thermometer to use with this smoker? I have an instant read one for the meat itself but I want to start reading temps within my smoker. (I don't trust the built in ones)
Maverick Redi Chek ET732 (think they have a newer one out now the ET733?)
It's a wireless unit with programmable alarms for if your smoker goes out of your desired temp range, and for if your meat is cooked. Means you can get a semblance of a night's sleep!
Or go the whole hog (love using that on this forum) and get a forced air system that you will learn to trust to keep the pit at the right temp. I used both as I got used to my WSM and how long meats took but only use the Maverick on the kettle now when smoking chickens on there for short periods of time.
This will only control pit temp so but is a god send now as I have learnt to trust it and can leave my WSM chugging away through the night and then just manage the end of the cook - testing the meat with my thermapen.
Came to about £40 including delivery and taxes and it also included a set of Bear Paws
I'll be testing it in anger at the weekend but it seems to work fine so far (in that I can get a signal from both the grill sensor and the meat sensor).
I got a weber branded wireless digital thermometer. It does the job but I would have expected a few more features. It has preset temps for different meats and the levels of doneness. Having said that I would have liked the option to allow me to set a specific temp and for the alarm to go off when it reached the temp. Not bad though. Probably a bit expensive at £50.
