They use glass enamel. It is fused on at hi temp. Not the same as the enamel we would get.somapop wrote:Looks like most high heat paint (including Hammerite) is matt black...wonder what the WSM's et al use for that glossy black? Possible I could paint over the existing high heat paint...dunno..I'll look into that in the future.
I know they're called UDS's for a reason...but it's tempting to turn them into real lookers

I can bend over it and get a dustpan and brush in there. Just swept it out after the seasoning. Think I'll just do that every time after it has cooled.
Re: Somapop' UDS Build
Yes...they're not that heavy actually.
Tip onto side they lift the bottom up into a bin bag and it's done. I'll be doing that for some time.
Cheers for the glass enamel tip...matt black it shall remain!

Not wishing to steal your thread, but I had my first burn last night in mine. Varying degrees of success. The big one being temp stability. How have you found yours? It was quite windy and gusty so probably just that? The ribs were lovely though. Will try and post some pics.
Re: Somapop' UDS Build
I haven't actually finished building mine yet. Popping down to Norfolk to collect a BBQ (22.5") I picked up second hand on line. When I return with it I should be ready to complete and start cooking!essexsmoker wrote:Not wishing to steal your thread, but I had my first burn last night in mine. Varying degrees of success. Aye - post some pics and recipes - I'm looking forward to doing some ribs myself.
Cheers.

Ahh, thought you had started using it... let us know how the temp stability goes.
I'm kicking myself with the rub receipe as I just made it up quick cos I didn't have any to hand. Didn't write it down and as it turns out it was really good.
lost count of the times I've done that with various meals. Must learn quicker!
The sauce was just baby rays.

What's the seal on your lid like? Mine wasn't the most steady before I added the stove rope to it, since then it's been like a rock. It'll hold 250 with maybe just one or two slight adjustments through the day on a 10-12 hour cook
Re: Somapop' UDS Build
^^ Still got to order my stove rope.
Any worries over any of the glass strands ever coming loose on that rope and landing on your cooking?
I suspect that being produced for stoves in general then they should be ok, but I've seen this mentioned on a couple of occasions...

Re: Somapop' UDS Build
I'm not worried to be honest, after a couple of cooks sans diffuser enough vaporised grease gunked up the rope that I don't think anything will fall off it
You could even go a step further and paint it with oil and bake it on during a seasoning run
