Minion/maze basket

Post by selwyn29 »

Hi all

I'm new to the long and slow cooking but enjoying learning. My husband has made me a minion/maze charcoal basket to control the temperature better and allow me to hot smoke and slow cook without keep having to get up and add coal all day.

Has anyone any experience of using one of these? Or bought one in the UK?

I think I know what you mean. Not sure where the minion bit comes from though. It's also called the snake method. I tried this with varying success. Can work well though for small cooks. For longer cooks it might not be enough coals. The minion method is fine though. I did a 10 n a half hour cook using it yesterday and then snuffed the fire. Could have got longer. The maze in it's true sense is normally more used in cold smoking as far as I know.

Normally charcoal mazes are used in bigger cabinet smokers like the backwoods that I cook on, but I've never felt the need to use one.

What smoker are you using, and what questions do you have about them?
