Apple Wood

Hi There,

I have some apple tree branches drying in my shed from this autumn and wanted to make some blocks for smoking. Any tips? Is there a certain amount of time I should dry them for? I know some people use green wood. Do I need to remove the bark?

In a shed with good airflow 9 to 12 months should be fine, you may be better off putting them outside where there is more airflow as wood can become mouldy if left in a damp shed, I wouldn't worry about removing the bark, some will come off when you chop it up if its fully dry anyway

Can't say I've ever aged wood for use on the smoker but for our wood burner stove we do tend to leave anything green so that it has done through at least one summer. I've reae conflicting advice on bark in different places but can't really see it being an issue.
