Plantain

Post by Pecker »

I had plantain for the first time yesterday.

It's like a big banana, but raw it tastes like a banana far too young/un-ripe. I followed a simple recipe - peel, cut off each end, cut in half, slice legthways, fry in butter for c.10 minutes.

It was very nice indeed. Reminded me of bananas (of course) and sweet potatoes. I'd like to cook it as a side the next time I barbecue jerk chicken - does anyone have a barbecue recipe?

I have some ideas. I think I want to do a mixture of plantain & sweet potatoes. Maybe roasted on the cooking grid, maybe roasted in a grill pan. I have the Weber Gourmet Griddle Pan, like in this video:

Chicken takes about 45 minutes and the plantain/sweet potato about 30. I'll see how it goes, but happy for any tips.

Brave move eating it raw it is meant to be cooked, and doesn't ripen to a sweet pulp like bannanas do.

I only nibbled a tiny bit of it raw - just to see what it was like.
