It's an interesting experiment, I always thought soaking was to slow down combustion rather then prevent it, which it seems to do in chips. It would be interesting to hear from the more experienced members.
On a similar vein Steven Raichlen stated he has tried both soaked and dry wood skewers and found little or no difference in their combustion times.
