Hi anyone know a cheap source of grilling planks. Seem expensive at a £8 - 12 a plank?

You can get about 4m of 25mm cedar from a timber yard for around £18. As long as you tell them what it's for and that it needs to be untreated and unfinished then you'll be fine.

When you get it home cut it into the required lengths, sand it and then give it a thorough washing.
Season it with olive oil and give it a bake in the oven on a low temp until its sealed.

Job done!

Chaps,
A little dense here, need your help. Have seen these planks before but not sure exactly what the point is.

It seems you soak the plank and put a thing, often a fish on it and cook.

So my main Qs are -
So what does it do is it a very subtle smoke?
Are these "1 shot deals" ie one fish and in the bin?
or can they do sevral in which case how do you clean them up?

As a one shot deal to put a £5 fish on a £10 plank seemed like the worst case of madness.....have I missed the point?

Cheers

Yes it's a subtle smoke, I've used them on fish, cheese and even burgers. They can generally be used multiple times providing you are not leaving them over direct heat the whole time.
