Rust

During my UDS build a couple of months ago I had a gap of a couple of weeks during the build and the inside started to rust. I'm now planning another build of a bbq using another barrel but this time cutting the side open and using as a lid. Any ideas how I can prevent the rust between cutting the barrel open and the burn, paint and seasoning process.

I wouldn't worry about a bit of rust, it will go when you do the seasoning before you cook on it.
